Child Life Volunteers
Child life volunteers are supervised by a child life specialist. They aid with children’s activities including setup and cleanup, and socialize with patients and families.
Acute Ortho and Acute Spine Volunteers
Volunteers greet all patients, family, and visitors with a warm welcome and a smile. They provide directions and information or accompany patients, family members, and visitors to their destinations. They also assist with patient admission and discharge. Volunteers may offer refreshments to family members and play games with patients or family members.
Food and Nutrition Service Volunteers
Food service volunteers assist with food preparation and sandwich making. They help put away supplies, set up and break down catered functions, and maintain kitchen cleanliness.
Immediate Care Center Volunteers
Volunteers visit with patients and families at the Samuels Orthopedic Immediate Care Center. They explain the immediate care process, obtain comfort items for patients, and accompany patients and family members to other areas of the hospital.
Surgery and Recovery Volunteers
Surgery and recovery volunteers assist patients who have had ambulatory or acute surgery and their visitors. They communicate with nursing staff as patients move through the surgical system. They also help with chart preparation and coordination, answer and direct phone calls, and complete computer and clerical tasks.
Pharmacy volunteers help the pharmacist or pharmacy assistant with repackaging, labeling, stocking, and inventory. They also assist the executive secretary with filing and paperwork.
Volunteers for the Initiative for Women with Disabilities—Young Women’s Program
These volunteers assist staff for the Initiative for Women with Disabilities—Young Women’s Program by helping set up before program events and with cleanup afterward. They assist participants with their belongings upon arrival and departure. They may also help participants with homework and during health and wellness classes, and assist instructors in handing out program materials and motivating participants.
Animal-Assisted Therapy Volunteers
Certified animal-assisted therapy dogs and volunteers who are registered with a specified pet handler organization offer emotional support and comfort to patients and their families. Volunteers are needed daily. Hours vary by department.
