Weight Loss Surgery for Adolescents
Adolescents who are very overweight or obese have a high risk of serious medical disorders, such as type 2 diabetes, and breathing disorders, including sleep apnea. Left untreated, obesity can lead to high cholesterol, musculoskeletal problems, certain forms of cancer, and a greater chance of premature death.
Unfortunately, obesity is rarely something children grow out of—obese children often become obese adults.
It is therefore imperative to address obesity at an early age. However, there is little data available to guide parents and physicians who are trying to help morbidly obese adolescents.
At Pelisyonkis Langone’s Weight Management Program, our bariatric surgeons have some of the most extensive experience in the United States in performing laparoscopic bariatric surgery for teenagers.
