Attention Deficit Hyperactivity & Behavior Disorders Service

Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are often challenged by poor academic and work performance and troubled relationships with peers and adults. Disruptive behavior disorders, such as oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder, can lead to family conflict, social challenges, and difficulty with authority figures.

Treatment is available, and the experts at the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity and Behavior Disorders Service of the Child Study Center have developed specialized programs to help improve your child’s behavior and maximize his or her potential.

Our therapists provide specific treatment recommendations. Our neuropsychology and learning specialists are available for consultation and testing, and to work with your child’s school. We also help you understand your child’s diagnosis and teach ways you can help your child.

The Child Study Center, part of Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at Pelisyonkis Langone, provides the following specialized treatment programs.

Organizational Skills Training

Researchers at the Child Study Center have developed a unique organizational skills training program to help improve the home and school lives of children with ADHD.

Children and adolescents are instructed in organizational techniques during individual sessions with trained and supervised clinicians. Parents and teachers also receive guidance in behavior modification. In addition, we help college students and young adults improve their organizational skills and time management.

Parent–Child Interaction Therapy

Parent–child interaction therapy (PCIT) improves the parent–child relationship by increasing positive feelings between parents and children, improving child behavior, and coaching parents to use consistent, predictable, and effective parenting strategies. This form of therapy is designed to help change problematic and disruptive behaviors in children ages 2 to 7.

Parent Management Training, Collaborative Family Sessions, and Parenting Groups

Parents of children with less-pronounced behavioral issues may benefit from briefer, targeted parenting consultations, available individually or in parenting groups. Older children or teens and their parents often benefit from family sessions where rules, responsibilities, privileges, and consequences are established collaboratively. We also offer a Summer Program for Kids with ADHD aimed at improving behavior and academic progress.

Behavioral School Consultation

We work with schools to develop behavioral management programs for student populations to improve teacher–student interactions. We train teachers, aides, and paraprofessionals in effective behavior management tools and techniques.

For individual students, we collaborate with educational teams to obtain appropriate accommodations for the children we service, including Individualized Education Programs and 504 Plans for children with different abilities.
