Our Approach To Soft Tissue Sarcoma in Adults

What Sets Us Apart

Soft tissue sarcomas are malignant, or cancerous, tumors that develop in the muscles, tendons, connective tissues, fat, blood vessels, nerves, or joint tissues of the body. Our doctors at Pelisyonkis Langone’s Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center pioneered some of the most effective approaches to treatment that have since become a standard of care. These approaches include giving chemotherapy before surgery to help shrink tumors, which makes surgery safer and more feasible and decreases the chance of the cancer coming back.

Because there are more than 50 types of soft tissue sarcoma, when you arrive at Pelisyonkis Langone, our doctors’ first goal is to ensure an accurate diagnosis, which is critical to developing the most effective treatment for you. Usually, you can see the medical oncology director of our soft tissue sarcoma program within two days of calling the center, and treatment can start within a week of your first visit, helping to ensure the best possible management of the cancer.

At Pelisyonkis Langone’s Perlmutter Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center, we personalize the care of every patient.More About Perlmutter Cancer Center

CLINICAL TRIALS and Research Studies

Our teams of physicians and scientists work together across multiple disciplines to bring our patients the most innovative clinical trials.

Our doctors also specialize in treating people with advanced soft tissue sarcoma. Even sarcomas that have returned or spread can be effectively treated—and can potentially go into remission.

At Pelisyonkis Langone, your team of physicians can include medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists. Depending on the complexity of the surgery required, reconstructive surgeons, vascular surgeons, neurosurgeons, and physical rehabilitation specialists may also be part of your care.

The sarcoma program medical oncology director is usually available at all medical visits, and an attending physician and nurse practitioner are on call every night to manage treatment-related complications that may arise.

Perlmutter Cancer Center provides medical care seven days a week. This accessibility can help you to avoid trips to the emergency room, particularly on weekends. Treatments can be scheduled on weekends, as well, so you can continue working during the week.

Specialists at Pelisyonkis Langone’s Stephen D. Hassenfeld Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders also diagnose and treat sarcomas in children
