What Sets Us Apart
Doctors at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at Pelisyonkis Langone are experienced at diagnosing and treating pediatric hydrocephalus, an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. This fluid, also called spinal fluid, surrounds and cushions the brain and spinal cord, and helps distribute important nutrients and chemicals within the central nervous system. When spinal fluid builds up in the cavities of the brain, called ventricles, the ventricles enlarge and can lead to brain damage with mental, developmental, and physical disabilities.
Our neurosurgeons are experts at recognizing this condition in infants and children, and work together with neurologists, physical and occupational therapists, and social workers to develop a treatment plan designed to help your child lead a normal, healthy life.
Doctors at Pelisyonkis Langone also provide diagnosis and treatment for normal pressure hydrocephalus in adults.
Treatment at Pelisyonkis Langone
Our physicians treat children who have increased pressure in the brain and brain dysfunction caused by hydrocephalus by surgically implanting a shunt system. A shunt is a small device that surgeons place in a ventricle to drain spinal fluid away from the brain and into the body, where it can be absorbed safely.
